Begin with Hitting a Golf Ball

Lolita / 2009-08-12

It seems like child's play, but golf is one of the most difficult games to master. The speed of the club head making impact with the ball determines where the ball will go. Hitting a golf ball straight and true has nothing to do with swinging the club hard. Instead, it is balance, coordination and the ability to shift one's weight from back leg to front that gives a ball accuracy and distance.

Step 1: The takeaway is the initial movement in the golf swing. The golfer must walk up to his golf ball and square his feet in the direction he wants it to go. Take a deep breath as you stand over the ball—and continue to breathe smoothly. Many golfers are concentrating so hard on what to do that they hold their breath. This is a mistake. Take the club head away from the ball smoothly and easily. Your weight should be centered as you stand over the ball but it should be on your back leg as you bring the club back.

Step 2: Once you reach the top of your swing, you should shift your weight forward and bring the club down. This is triggered by a movement of your legs. They quickly move toward the target, which begins the descent of the club. Make solid contact by keeping your head straight and keeping your eye on the ball. The natural inclination is to pick up your head and see where your shot is going. Don't rush it. Your head will come up naturally during the follow-through.

Step 3: After you make contact with the club head on the ball, continue forward with the club head and follow through until the natural conclusion of the swing. This usually occurs when you face the target and the club wraps around your shoulders. It is about this time that your head comes up and you can see your shot fly away from you and toward the green. By not rushing your follow-through, you are assured of a good shot if you have followed steps 1 and 2 correctly.

Step 4: Practice the fundamentals of your golf swing as much as you can. Go to the driving range and hit a bucket of balls or play a late round of golf after work. Instead of trying to bash each ball at the driving range, do it with a sense of purpose. Think about the accuracy of each shot and what it would take to hit a ball 175 yards down the middle or 220 yards with a bit of a right-to-left movement. The more one practices the easier it becomes.

Things you will need: Golf clubs, Golf bag, Golf balls, Golf shoes, Tees, Tips

Walk up to your ball, take the proper stance, look at your target and hit it. Many golfers tend to lose confidence because they stand over the ball a long time. By walking up to the ball, going through your normal pre-shot routine and not delaying, you will tend to hit your best shot a lot more of the time.

Warnings

Don't expect too much too soon. Patience is needed as your game develops. Do not throw clubs or break them. You will not have an opportunity to play if you cannot conduct yourself properly.
